Amsterdam Layover Guide: Can You Leave the Airport and Visit the City?

An Amsterdam layover can be an opportunity to see the canals, enjoy a Dutch café and explore a little of the city between flights. But is there enough time to leave Schiphol Airport? Yes, you can leave Schiphol during a layover if you meet the entry requirements for the Netherlands and have enough time to return for your next flight. As a practical planning guideline, consider a city visit with a layover of at least eight hours. Six to eight hours may allow a short outing, but leaves less room for delays. The key is to calculate your actual sightseeing time before making plans.
How Long Does Your Amsterdam Layover Need to Be?
Your layover runs from your scheduled arrival to your next departure. That includes getting off the aircraft, airport formalities, travel in both directions and preparing for your connecting flight.
These are conservative planning suggestions, rather than official airport minimums: Scheduled layover Suggested approach Under 6 hours Stay at Schiphol rather than plan a city visit. 6–8 hours Consider only a brief outing if entry procedures, flight timing and transport allow it. 8–10 hours Plan a short walk and a meal, with a generous return buffer. More than 10 hours Consider a longer city visit, depending on arrival time and your onward flight. Overnight Check how much usable evening or morning time you have before choosing a city hotel.
A daytime layover offers different possibilities from an overnight connection. Ten hours between flights can still leave little sightseeing time if most of it falls during the night.
Recalculate after you land. If your inbound flight is delayed, shorten your plans or stay at the airport.

Can You Enter the Netherlands During a Layover?
Leaving Schiphol to visit Amsterdam means entering the Netherlands and the Schengen Area. Whether you can do this depends on your nationality, travel documents and any applicable visa conditions.
An airport transit visa does not allow you to leave the international transit area to visit Amsterdam. If you need a visa to enter the Netherlands, you must have the appropriate permission before travelling. Check your circumstances through the official NetherlandsWorldwide visa guidance.
Getting from Schiphol to Amsterdam City Centre
By train
The train is a practical option if you want to begin your visit near Amsterdam Centraal. NS lists a journey time of approximately 17 minutes between Schiphol and Amsterdam Centraal. That is the train journey itself. Allow additional time to reach the platform, wait for a departure and walk to your first stop. Check the NS journey information for current services and engineering works.
By taxi or pre-booked transfer
A taxi can be convenient if you are travelling with children, carrying luggage or heading to a specific address.
For a layover, arrange both your arrival transfer and return pickup. Provide your flight details, passenger count and luggage requirements, and agree on a pickup point that is easy to find.
Road travel times depend on traffic and your destination. A taxi is not automatically faster than the train, so choose the option that best fits your route and available time.
What to Do in Amsterdam During a Short Layover
For a first visit, keep your plans focused on one area. A canal walk and an unhurried meal are easier to manage than several attractions with fixed entry times.
For a first visit, keep your plans focused on one area. A canal walk and an unhurried meal are easier to manage than several attractions with fixed entry times.
1. Walk Along the Canals
Make the canals the centrepiece of your visit. You do not need a packed itinerary to enjoy Amsterdam: bridges, narrow houses and waterside streets provide plenty to see on a short walk.
A suggested route from Amsterdam Centraal is:
Amsterdam Centraal → Brouwersgracht → a short section of the Jordaan → return towards Centraal.
Choose your turnaround time before you start. Treat the route as flexible, rather than something you must complete.
2. Explore a Little of the Jordaan
The Jordaan is a good area for a relaxed wander, with canal views and traditional cafés. Pick a few streets, stop when something catches your attention and resist the temptation to cross the entire city. Browse I amsterdam’s Jordaan guide for inspiration.
3. Stop for Coffee and Something to Eat
Leave time to sit down. A coffee, a slice of apple pie or a simple lunch can make a short visit feel more complete than rushing between landmarks.
Choose somewhere near your walking route or return pickup point. Tell the staff if you have limited time, and avoid committing to a lengthy meal.
4. Add an Attraction Only If Your Schedule Allows
With a longer layover, you could consider a museum or canal cruise. Check ticket availability, the full activity duration and the distance from your return transport before booking.
For a shorter visit, avoid activities that lock you into a finish time. Being able to leave early is useful when your next flight sets the schedule.
